Chiyoda-Ku

Population Density (4,492 persons / km2

Chiyoda-Ku is right in the middle of Tokyo and is one of the most important wards where the Supreme Court, Prime Minister`s residence and National Diet Building are located.

It is a commercial district with daytime population of 850,000, while night time population is only 45,000.

The Emperor of Japan is also staying here in the Tokyo Imperial Palace (皇居). Some of the gardens of the Imperial Palace are open to the public, and is one of the main tourist spots for watching sakura and maple leaves.

Main residential areas: Iidabashi (飯田橋) and Kanda (神田)

Chuo-Ku

Population Density (12,635 persons / km2

Chuo-Ku is located in the centre of Tokyo, and is the hub of Tokyo's economic and financial activities.

The Bank of Japan, Tokyo Stock Exchange, and a lot of banking and financial institutions are all located in this area.

Nihonbashi (日本橋) area still has quite a number of eminent buildings from the Edo era. There are also a lot of traditional food shops, sushi bars and wholesale markets.

Tsukishima (月島) is famous for Monja (もんじゃ) , which is a special dish from Kanto region, cooked with a mixture of batter and various ingredients such as cabbage, pork and seafood etc.

This area has more than 70 Monja restaurants, each restaurant is relatively small and can cater for around 20-30 customers.

During the recent years, the Government is actively developing the Kachidoki (勝どき) and Harumi (晴海) area. A lot of high-rise residential towers and apartments were built and the property prices kept rising.

In addition, with respect to the upcoming Tokyo Olympics in 2020, the Government has decided to redevelop this area into an Olympic Village by building more highways to Ginza and Shinbashi to expedite travelling by commuters.

This area is mainly dominated with high-rise apartments. There are not so many houses in this ward.

Minato-Ku

Population Density (11,383 persons / km2)

Minato-Ku is the centre of business activities. Many foreign and famous headquarters are located here, such as Yahoo, Softbank, Fujitsu Computer company etc.

There are also a lot of embassies and foreign residence (accounts for 10% of the population, mainly from Europe and America).

Since this is a business centre, not many people live here.

This ward is one of the most expensive areas in Tokyo, with a lot of trendy and stylish shops, and restaurants.

Minato-Ku is an Luxurious Residential area, including: Azabu (麻布), Akasaka (赤坂), Aoyama (青山), Takanawa (高輪) and Shirokanedai (白金台).

Shinjuku-Ku

Population Density (17,618 persons / km2

Shinjuku is one of the most famous amusement and tourist areas in the world.

It is also a shopping paradise with many famous department stores such as:

LUMINE, 0101, Isetan and Takashimaya. Shinjuku Gyoen Garden (新宿御苑) is also one of the largest park in Tokyo and one of the best viewing spots for sakura and maple leaves.

Shinjuku-Ku has a large variety of properties, ranging from very expensive high-rise tower mansions to small 1 Room studio flats.

Takadanobaba (高田馬場) is a student area, with a lot of language schools. Waseda University is also located here with a lot of cheap restaurants and café around. A lot of students choose to stay in this area for convenience.

Kagurazaka (神樂坂) is a traditional area with many traditional Japanese restaurants and small shops selling Japanese food. Lately, a lot of trendy restaurants set up their business there. This area still has some small roads from Edo area, and is relatively quiet. It is quite good for living.

Ochiai (落合) is another residential area, with mainly houses and quiet surroundings.

Bunkyo-Ku

Population Density (17,795 persons / km2

Bunkyo-Ku is also called 'The Home of Education', because Japan No. 1 National University, Tokyo University, and many other famous High schools and universities are located in this area. Since the Mieji period, many scholars and politicians had lived here too.

The Koishikawa Korakuen Garden (小石川後楽園) and Rikugien Garden (六義園) are one of those traditional Japanese gardens with pond and landscape. They attract many tourists every year.

The major industry in Bunkyo is printing and book-binding (accounts for almost 70%).

This ward is very suitable for students, singles, families and the retired to live. The surrounding is very quiet.

Main residential areas: Myogadani (茗荷谷), Hongo (本郷) and Hakusan (白山).

Shibuya-Ku

Population Density (14,034 persons / km2

Shibuya-Ku is famous for its entertainment industries, nightlife and trendy restaurants and coffee shops.

It is also known as the fashion centre for young people.

Shibuya Station is currently undergoing big reconstruction, such as, improving platforms and facilities in the station, and also constructing high-rise commercial buildings and shopping malls etc. This re-development project will take at least 6 years to complete.

Main residential areas include: Daikanyama (代官山), Ebisu (惠比壽), Hiroo (廣尾), Sasatsuka (笹塚) and Shoto (松濤) etc.


Shinagawa-Ku

Population Density (16,135 persons / km2

Shinagawa-Ku has a very good transportation network and it is easily accessible. It takes 20-30 minutes from Shinagawa-Ku to Shinjuku, Shibuya, Roppongi, Ikebukuro, Ginza and even Yokohama.

Many companies are headquartered in Shinagawa, for example, Sony and Nikon.

The Osaki (大崎) station had been re-developed and many more hotels, high-rise office buildings and high-rise tower mansions were built.

Main residential areas include: Gotanda (五反田), North Shinagawa (北品川), Shinbanba (新馬場), Gotenyama (御殿山), Ooimachi (大井町).

Meguro-Ku

Population Density (18,014 persons / km2

Meguro-Ku has a very good living environment for singles and families, especially for women.

Jiyugaoka (自由之丘) and Nakameguro (中目黑) are famous for their small fashionable boutiques, unique restaurants and coffee shops.

Numerous sakura trees were planted along the Megurogawa (目黑川) and is one of the famous tourists spots for sakura.

Luxurious residential areas include: Himonya (碑文谷), Kakinokizaka (柿ノ木坂) and Yakumo (八雲).

Ota-Ku

Population Density (11,532 persons / km2

Ota-Ku has the largest area within the 23 wards in Tokyo. It is facing Tokyo Bay and very close to Haneda Airport.

Kamata (蒲田) is an industrial area with many small to medium size factories in machinery.

Since Haneda Airport introduced international airlines in 2010, a lot of white collars and families like to move to this area for living, especially in Kamata. Currently, Kamata area accounts for approximately 40% of the population of this ward.

In order to make Haneda Airport more internationalized, Government is improving the transportation network in the surroundings and building more apartments with respect to the possible population increase.

The Government is also planning to build a new train line, connecting Haneda Airport, Kamato, Shibuya, Shinjuku and Ikebukuro. In the near future, people can travel to Shibuya from Haneda Airport within 30 minutes!

On the other end, Denenchofu (田園調布) is a high-end luxurious residential area.

Setagaya-Ku

Population Density (14,820 persons / km2

Setagaya-Ku is the largest area within the 23 wards and has population of more than 860,000.

This area is a Luxurious residential area with many parks.

Main residential areas include: Shimokitazawa (下北沢), Sangenjaya (三軒茶屋), Futakotamagawa (二子玉川), Seijogakuen (成城學園).


Nakano-Ku

Population Density (19,965 persons / km2

Nakano-Ku is an highly-populated ward. As the shops and restaurants are relatively cheap, therefore, a lot of students and young couples like to live in this area.

With respect to transportation, the train network is also very convenient.

People can commute from Nakano to Central Tokyo within 10 - 15 minutes.

Main residential areas: Nakano (中野), Higashi Nakano (東中野).

Suginami-Ku

Population Density (15,874 persons / km2

There is a mixture of both traditional and young culture in Suginami-Ku. Every year, the Koenji Awaodori (高円寺阿波舞) takes place in Koenji where almost 10,000 performers dance in traditional costume.

On the other hand, there are also a lot of second-hand book shops, anime shops and bars etc.,

The price index in this ward is relatively low, so it is very popular among young people.

This area has a lot of parks, and the living environment is pretty good.

This is a suburban residential area, dominated by low-rise buildings & houses.

Main residential areas: Asagaya (阿佐ヶ谷), Koenji (高円寺) & Ogikubo (荻窪).


Toshima-Ku

Population Density (20,673 persons / km2

One of the most famous attractions in Toshima-Ku is Ikebukuro (池袋).

Around Ikebukuro, there are a lot of department stores such as:

Seibu, Tobu, PARCO, 0101 etc.

The Sunshine City is also there which is a shopping complex with many boutiques for young people, restaurants and aquarium.

For the past few years, Ikebukuro has become one of the most popular residential areas in Japan.

Otsuka (大塚) is one station away from Ikebukuro. This area is relatively quiet and very suitable for living.

Meijiro (目白), Takada (高田) and Zoshigaya (雑司が谷) are Luxurious residential area with plenty of low-rise buildings & houses there.

Kita-Ku

Population Density (16,179 persons / km2

Jujo (十条) is an area full of students in Kita-Ku. There are a lot of traditional shopping arcades and very convenient in terms of living.

Main residential areas: Akabane (赤羽), Ouji (王子), Tabata (田端), Jujo (十条)

Itabashi-Ku

Population Density (16,704 persons / km2

There are a lot of residential areas and traditional shopping arcades there, and it is very convenient.

Main residential areas: Itabashi (板橋), Nerimasu (成增), Oyama (大山)

Nerima-Ku

Population Density (14,727 persons / km2

Since a lot of famous Anima and Manga were produced in Nerima-Ku, it is also known as `The Birthplace of Anime`.

At the same time, Nerima-Ku has also the largest area of agricultural land among the other wards, accounts for 40% of the total area.

This area has a lot of greeneries and also the most number of parks among the 23 wards.

As Nerima-Ku is a suburban area, so rents are cheap.

Main residential areas: Nerima (練馬), Shakujiikoen (石神井公園)


Taito-Ku

Population Density (18,390 persons / km2

The most famous places in Taito-Ku are Ueno (上野) and Asakusa (淺草).

Asakusa is famous for its old-town atmosphere with many interesting Japanese doll specialty stores, traditional handicraft and grocery shops.

Sumidagawa Fireworks Festival (隅田川花火大會) is an annual fireworks festival and it is held in Sumidagawa (one the biggest Fireworks festivals in Tokyo).

The Tokyo National Museum, National Science Museum and National Museum of Western Art are located in Ueno. This area has been an art and cultural heartland of modern Japan.

Ameyoko (アメ横)is another attraction in Ueno, with more than 500 shops, selling a large variety of items, from fresh vegetables and seafood, footwear, clothes to cosmetics etc.

Ueon Park is also famous for Sakura and is the first public park in Japan.

Main residential areas: Minowa (三之輪), Okachimachi (御徒町).

Sumida-Ku

Population Density (18,329 persons / km2

Since 2012, the Tokyo Skytree replaced Tokyo Tower, and is the tallest television broadcasting tower in the world.

The Skytree also has a shopping complex with more than 300 shops and Aquarium.

Ryougoku Sumo Hall (兩國國技館) and the Edo Tokyo Museum (江戸東京博物館) are also located in this ward.

Kinshicho Station is also a convenient area to live, there are 100 Yen shop and many stores selling baby and kids clothes and goods.

Main residential area: Kinshicho (錦糸町)

Koto-Ku

Population Density (12,010 persons / km2

One of the main attractions in Koto-Ku is the Odaiba (台場), which is a large artificial island in Tokyo Bay and it has many large hotels and shopping malls (including the Diver City, Aqua City and Venus Fort etc.)

With the upcoming Tokyo Olympics in 2020, the Government will build new gymnasium and swimming pools and a number of sports centres and facilities.

As population is expected to increase, the Government will continue to develop this area and build many high-rise residential tower mansions.

Main residential areas: Toyosu (豊洲), Monnaka (門仲), Koyosumishirakawa (清澄白河), Kameido (亀戸).

Arakawa-Ku

Population Density (20,241 persons / km2

The living expenses and rents are relatively cheap in Arakawa-Ku, so attracting a lot of foreigners to live in this area.

Since the Skyliner Express Train started operations since 2010, it only takes 36 minutes from Narita Airport to Nippori Station, as compared to Narita Express.

Main residential areas: Nippori (日暮里), Nishi Nippori (西日暮里), Minamisenju (南千住).

Adachi-Ku

Population Density (12,578 persons / km2

Adachi-Ku is located in the North of Tokyo, and people commute to this ward mainly via JR Joban Line, Chiyoda Line and Hibiya Line.

Kitasenju (北千住) is one of the popular areas to live. It is one of the big terminal stations with many supermarkets, and department stores nearby.

The land price and rents are relatively cheap, so a lot singles and small families like to live here.

Main residential areas: Kitasenju (北千住), Ayase (綾瀬), Nishiarai (西新井)

Katsushika-Ku

Population Density (12,835 persons / km2

Katsushika-Ku is another suburban residential area and has a lot of shopping arcades. Although it is located in the North-East of Tokyo, a lot of white collar workes like to stay some distance from the heart of Tokyo.

Main residential areas: Kanamachi (金町), Higashishinnkoiwa (東新小岩), Ohanachaya (お花茶屋)

Edogawa-Ku

Population Density (13,544 persons / km2

Edogawa-Ku is next to the Chiba Prefecture, and facing Tokyo Bay.

This ward is very similar to Katsushika-Ku. Both the rent and living expenses are low, therefore, a lot of families move to this area to live.

Edogawa-Ku also has a lot of parks and aquarium. The living environment is quite good.

Main residential areas: Kasai (葛西), Hirai (平井), Funabori (船堀).
